Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially inaugurated the expanded Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport. This event marks a notable advancement in the country’s aviation capabilities, showcasing an impressive blend of technological innovation and passenger-centric enhancements.
Under the guidance of GMR-led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the new Terminal 1 is set to redefine the travel experience for millions. The terminal’s expansion doubles its capacity to accommodate 40 million passengers annually, a leap that places Delhi Airport in the league of the world’s most significant aviation hubs with a combined capacity of 100 million passengers per year.
This transformation is not merely an increase in size but a comprehensive overhaul aimed at streamlining passenger flow and enhancing overall satisfaction. The project, initiated in 2019 as part of DIAL’s futuristic vision outlined in the Master Plan 2016, responds to the surging demand in air traffic and passenger numbers which have outstripped previous projections.
The unveiling of Terminal 1 is a momentous occasion, representing a fusion of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. It features advanced facilities such as the Facial Recognition System (DIGIYATRA) for streamlined entry, Automated Tray Retrieval Systems, and expansive check-in areas equipped with Self Baggage Drop kiosks. The redesigned space not only accommodates more passengers but does so with a focus on convenience, offering prayer rooms, yoga spaces, and quiet zones bathed in natural light.
In his remarks, I Prabhakara Rao, Group Deputy Managing Director of GMR Group, highlighted the project’s broader implications for India’s growth and aviation excellence. He emphasized the terminal’s role in connecting India more closely to the global community, boosting the economy, and fostering innovation. Rao also underscored the seamless journey promised by the new terminal, facilitated by cutting-edge technology and designed to offer a tranquil, efficient, and enjoyable travel experience.

Moreover, the terminal’s redesign prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility, with enhanced facilities for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM), ensuring a comfortable and dignified experience for all travelers.
Delhi Airport’s city-side developments have also been revamped to improve accessibility and reduce congestion, making arrivals and departures smoother for both passengers and those meeting them. The commitment to sustainability is evident in the terminal’s design, which adheres to the highest green building standards, underscoring DIAL’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
The expanded Terminal 1 is part of a suite of upgrades under the Phase 3A Expansion project, which includes the construction of a fourth runway and dual elevated Eastern Cross Taxiways, aimed at reducing taxi times and emissions, further cementing Delhi Airport’s status as a pioneer in sustainable aviation practices.
